The Healthcare System in Australia
The Australian HealthCare system is a combination of Private and Public services.
Medicare
Australian taxpayers contributes 1.5% of salary into Medicare (surcharge applies to people with taxable income over $50,000 – unless they private health insurance).
Medicare can be used by all Australian residents.
The system covers all in hospital services, if admitted as a public patient, and services provided by GPs and Specialists in their rooms.
Private health provider allows you to choose your healthcare provider and the hospital you wish to be treated at.
Private health insurance is required for coverage of ancillary services:
- dental,
- physiotherapy,
- chiropractic,
- podiatry,
- optical etc.
