English Proficiency Language
Medical Professionals coming from a country where English is not the first language, will be asked to sit the IELTS – International English Language Test System.
Australian requirement is a minimum overall score of 7.0, with a minimum score in each of the four components not less than 7.0.

Registration
Physicians – Australian Medical Council
Although the government believe Australia has sufficient medical personnel to meet the needs of the country, there are specific regional areas and specialties where there is a medical workforce shortage. Positions that cannot be filled through local advertising can apply for Area of Need status (AON) which allows the organization to recruit Overseas Trained Doctors (OTD).
Medical personnel interested in coming to Australia are eligible for 2 year temporary registration for an AON position. This term can be extended and Residency can be sought at this point. In addition to employment as a medical officer in the public hospital system, many regional hospitals employ specialists on a fee for service arrangement providing specialists with the opportunity to manage a private and public patients load.
All OTDs have their qualifications assessed by the Australian Medical Council (AMC). Their relevant Specialist College following successful assessment registration is required in the State the medical professional will practice. Only following the State registration can a 2 year visa be issued.
Nurses – Nursing Council of Australia
Requirements for registration are:
- BSN
- Minimum 3 year Registered Nurse Training
- Minimum 2 year post graduate experience
- Evidence of the ability to speak and write English – IELTS
Allied Health
Generally speaking, all medical specialists seeking registration in Australia must have the appropriate qualifications, demonstrated competencies and required clinical experience for practice according to the particular field’s Registration board.
Likewise, the applicant must be competent in written and spoken English.
